The Sierra Leone National Film Workshop (SLNFW) is the first and only indigenous, non-profit, non-governmental, national organisation created specifically to support the practice and development of filmmaking in Sierra Leone.

The Workshop is continuously developing programmes to help utilise film production as an important educational, economic, and socially empowering tool, whether it is helping others to provide a voice to local marginalised groups in communities or contributing to the production of feature film projects aimed at international distribution.

Our developing programs and services are available to everyone, irrespective of ethnicity, sexuality, religion or political orientation and as a result we have become relied upon as de facto organisation to help promote all economic, educational and entertainment aspects of Sierra Leone’s indigenous film industry.

Our pioneering work in helping to develop awareness, build capacity and change perceptions about the possibilities of filmmaking in Sierra Leone, remain unmatched. Our work includes groundbreaking projects which were all achieved entirely by the support of local filmmakers who generously volunteered their time, skills and energies - without any international or government finance or other support - for the benefit and development of the Sierra Leone filmmaking community at large.

Some examples of these innovative and successful projects include the following:-

  • Putting Sierra Leone In The Picture The first and only published international white paper on the existence and proposed development of Sierra Leone's indigenous film industry
  • Freetown Film Festival
The first and only internationally recognised annual film festival in Sierra Leone
  • SLFilmNet (Sierra Leone Film Network)
The first and only online resource on Sierra Leone filmmaking
  • Sierra Leone Film Directory
The first and only directory of Sierra Leone-produced films
  • XTV-SL
The first online global television channel to be launched, that was produced by and for Sierra Leonean youth
  • SL Film Union
The first initiative to create a recognized membership organisation for professionals working in the Sierra Leone film industry
With so many projects, we quickly outgrew our limited capacities to administer them all, and a new 'management' organisation was required. As a result, all these projects (including ourselves) are now managed by the Sierra Leone Film Foundation and form the heart of the Sierra Leone Film Network (SLFilmNet).

Now that all of these projects are standing successfully on their own, and with the knowledge that the Foundation will be in a better position to continue to develop and maintain new initiatives and resources for Sierra Leone filmmakers, the Sierra Leone National Film Workshop is now able to re-focus its energies on two key areas:-

  • The provision of Training opportunities
  • The provision of Production Services to local and international productions.
